Boris Johnson Apologizes to Downing Street Lockdown Party
Boris Johnson of Britain, Prime Minister, has apologized to Parliament for attending a Downing Street garden party in 2020 when the country was under a strict coronavirus ban. Johnson had never admitted to having been at the gathering.
I apologize. I am aware of the extraordinary sacrifices made by millions of Americans over the past 18 months. I understand the pain they have gone through. They are unable to grieve their loved ones, cannot live the lives they want or do the things that they love. I understand the anger they feel towards me and the government that I lead when they feel that the rules are not being followed in Downing Street. Although I cannot predict the results of the inquiry, I have enough knowledge to know that there were things that we did not do right. I must accept responsibility. Number 10 is a large department. The office has a garden that serves as an extension. This garden has been in constant usage because of the vital role of fresh oxygen in stopping the virus from spreading. I was convinced that this was a work event when I visited the garden at 6 on the 20th May 2020 to thank staff members before returning to my office 25 minutes later to continue my work. However, I should have brought everyone back inside, Mr. Speaker. I should have thought of another way to say thank you.
