W.H.O., Covid Cases in Europe More than Doubled in Two Weeks Says
The World Health Organization warned that the Omicron coronavirus variant could infect more than half the European population in the next six to eight week.
-
The number of cases of Covid-19 reported in the region was more than seven millions. This is more than double the number of cases reported in the previous two weeks. According to the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, more than 50% of the population will become infected by Omicron within the next six-to eight weeks. Omicron is still being protected by the currently approved vaccines. Due to the unprecedented transmission, we are seeing an increase of Covid-19 hospitalizations. Omicron is threatening to overwhelm many countries and disrupt their health systems. I am also concerned about the fact that Omicron is still moving east, meaning we may not see its full impact in countries with lower vaccination coverage, or where there will be more severe disease among the unvaccinated. There is still time to plan ahead and act quickly for countries that have not been affected by the Omicron surge.
